Nylon sticks and cymbals?

Question:I'm getting some sticks ready for a band competion last week and my friend says to no use my nylon stick, but wood. i asked why and he said that they messed up his cymbals real bad. is this true and if it is what happens to it

well it sorta dents the cymbal but doesnt ruin it. it just looks bad. it wont change the sound or anything
