Taking grades is to measure your progress on other people's terms. Find a good teacher, and let the learning of the instrument be its own aim. If you choose to take the exams, that's up to you, but grades are grades, and progress is progress. Measure your progress by comparing yourself to yourself. As to choosing which instrument is easier - that will depend entirely upon you. Some people find one instrument easy which another will struggle with. Try a lesson on each, and see which feels most natural to you.
