Question:

Does anyone go to this school? Etobicoke School of the Arts?

Hello! I'm auditioning for the drama and musical theatre programs at ESA on January 26th. I'm auditioning for grade 10. I've been taking singing lessons for several years and I went to a performing arts elementary school (by audition). I've already chosen my monologue and songs. I take dance classes. I just wanted to know what to expect at the audition (I've done auditions before but I'd like to know any info specific to this audition) and what life is like at the school. Thnx in advance!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Great school! My sister went there, 10 years ago. I went to Martingrove, but I was there a few times for the Sears Festival and things like that.

Good luck with the audition.

EDIT: This is from my sister:

"Since she is auditioning for grade 10, in January, her experience is going to be different from mine in some ways, since there will not be as many people as the spring auditions. But basically, for the drama, she will go into one of the large open drama rooms with about 4 other kids and as a group they will be asked to act out strange situations like walking on the moon, eating dinner, riding on the subway, to see their ability to act physically. The room is large and carpeted, with various set pieces scattered around the walls and some haning from the ceiling (I mention that because it can be kind of distracting) with large windows down the side, and the lights wil probably be off to keep things relaxed. It's possible they will have changed to doing the audiitions in the mini-theatre, which would be more intimidating. Then the group will be moved into the hall, and one at at time they will be called into to present their monologue to two drama teachers who usually sit at a table reviewing papers and watching you. You have the whole space to move in. And thats it. They usually have you go to the cafeteria to prepare for any other auditions you may have that day.

The music theatre audition is primarily just the singing and dancing. I don't remember doing a monologue for MT. Basically you go to the Music Theatre room which is upstairs, in a long room with mirrors down one wall, and windows down the opposite wall, and the curtains may or may not be closed on the mirrors. Someone will take your sheet music (as they expect you to have your piece memorized), one copy for the pianist and another for the teachers, again two who will hear your piece. Mr. Viera, if he is still there will play for you, and you will simply stand and sing your piece. Again you have a large space to move in so movement is good, if your piece calls for it. Either before or after your vocal audition, the group of auditioners will be gathered onto the main theatre stage for the dance audtion. The dance studios will be busy auditioning the dance majors.

The dance audition is more fun, since you will be in a group. The teacher will stand in front at the edge of the stage and will teach you a short sequence to dance with an easy song. You will be expected to learn both the song and the dance quickly, and then depending on how many people there are, in small groups you will be called in from the hall to perform. They will be using the theatre lights, so make it as big and real as possible. Whatever piece they choose, you can be sure it will be something fun and upbeat, and they want to see what kind of energy you can project from the stage, so smile and make it big.

And thats pretty much it. Good luck!"
