Question: How and why did the effects of Christianity on society and government differ in the west and in the Byzantine !?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In the West, after the legalization of Christianity the Capital of the Empire was moved to Constantinople!. Therefore, the Bishop of Rome had a freer hand, and after the fall of the Empire, became a power unto himself, therefore Christianity became the unifying force of Europe and saturated all aspects of Society!.

In Byzantium the Patriarch was still under the thumb of the Emperor!. His influence was important and saturated the government, but the government also influenced the development of Christianity in the East!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mike, above, has a really good answer!.

To add: The dividing line here between east and west here would be about 750ad!. That year was the last time the Byzantines exercised any significant power over Rome; the emperor complained about him, and had the pope dragged to COnstantinople in chains!. But by about 800ad - partly due to the influence of Charlemagne, who by this time had conquered Rome itself - The papacy was pretty well an entity onto itself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
