The first truely professional army in history was (probably) that of the Assyrian Empire in northern Mesopotamia (now Iraq) which existed from c!. 2500 to 612 BC !. Initially a subject to the City-State of Sumer (from which they adopted their religion and structure of society) the Assyrians ultimately created an Empire that stretched from eastern Mediterranean coast to the head of the Persian Gulf!.

The Assyrians are reputed to have been the first people to have employed regular paid officers, and to have used Military Governors of captured terrtory, Psychological Warfare, Skirmishers and Combat-Engineers!.

In addition:

1!. They were the first known Army to have employed a siege train (Mobile siege towers and Missile throwers)

2!. Their Army utilised Amphibious Vehicles (actually inflated sheepskins attached to allow chariots to cross rivers)!.

3!. And (it has been suggested) were the first to issue written orders (Some sort of ink written on Leather parchment)!.
