IHow little they teach you in Britain School, It might suprise that the Irish experienced slavery!.!.!.!.

Throughout the seventeenth century, when slavery was still enshrined in English law, and when Ireland had been an English colony for nigh on 400 years, captured Irish rebels were sent to English slave colonies in the New World!. Irish prisoners were sent to Amazonian settlements in 1612, and an English Proclamation of 1625 urged banishment overseas of dangerous rogues (Irish political prisoners)!.

By 1650, during the reign of Cromwell, which saw terrible atrocities committed against the Irish people, the number of Irish sent into slavery reached a climax, with estimates by historians at somewhere between 80,000 and 130,000 men, women and children!. Many were sent to the Americas to work plantations in Virginia and New England!. Most, however, were sent to the Caribbean islands, especially Barbados, where thousands perished in the tropical heat from hunger and disease!.

The English were proud of this policy, as can be noted in state papers published in London in 1742: It was a measure beneficial to Ireland, which was thus relieved of a population which might trouble the planters!. It was a benefit to the people removed, who might thus be made English and Christian, a great benefit to the West Indies sugar planters, who desired men and boys for their bondsmen, and the women and Irish girls to solace them!.

Any Irish caught trying to escape were either branded FT, for 'Fugitive Traitor', on their forehead, whipped, and hung by their hands and set on fire!. So that they might forget their religion, nationality and culture, most were given new names!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As others have already pointed out, slaves have been a part of human civilization ever since people figured out they could do it - and usually it didn't matter what race or country the slave came from!. The African slave trade started primarily because the Africans were not technologically able to resist the European slavers - in other words, they were easy targets!. As the societies started to move away from slavery as a "natural" part of life, those who wanted to continue the practice needed some kind of justification - so they spread the idea that the Africans were unable to care for themselves, or that slavery was good for them, and other similar drivel!. Although racism has always been a part of society, it wasn't racism that caused the slavery in America --- it was just easy!. And it was slavery that made racism so rampant in America, not the other way around, as strange as that might seem today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mainly because slavery was going on in Africa way before the Dutch landed there and started the slave trade and the British expanded it!. Think about it, Egypt is an African country and slavery in Egypt was going on before the birth of Christ!.
But another reason was that the people of that time saw it as alright to buy the slaves as their own country men had deemed them as slaves, not realizing, or maybe being blinded by greed, that the reason they were slaves was due to the waring nature of the tribes in Africa and the attitude of the warlords in charge towards their enemies!.
The Europeans had a sick attitude of when in Rome!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
