They wanted to be young and free for a while before settling down!. They didn't just want to go from the confines of living at home with mom'n'dad under their rules to being married and living with their husbands under the hustand's rules!. They wanted a break to be wild, maybe discover who they were, experiment a little!. They bobbed their hair so it was loose and full of movement!. They stopped wearing corsets and whale bone stays that used to hold them tightly in!. They raised their skirt hems so not only ankles showed but also knees--and the silk stocking exposed their skin! They spoke up with their own opinions (albeit, some of it may have been rather shallow and trite since women weren't always educated or encouraged to deep thoughts)!. Some of them had pre-marital sex (and had to deal with the resulting reputations and/or pregnancies)!. They started smoking (one of the negative legacies) and drinking, dancing in public!. Basically, they claimed their bodies, their femaleness, and delighted in it, flaunted it!. And they learned that women were valuable members of society, not just baby makers and house keepers!. By 1920, women had the right to vote so the flappers added a new voting force (albeit, highly influenced by friends and family)!. It's the first time in the US that women got up in the spotlight and said "hey, look at me, I am worth the best life has to offer, men shouldn't be the only ones who are entitled to have fun!."
