One would guess about 1911 !!

On August 20th, 1910, Lt Jacob Earl Fickel, US Army fired a rifle twice at a target from an altitude of 100 feet with Glenn H!. Curtiss flying the airplane!. It was done at Sheepshead Bay Race Track near New York City!. This proved that a gun could be fired from an airplane without the plane breaking up into pieces due to the gun’s recoil!.

Fickel became the first aerial gunner in America!. These experiments led to low recoil machine guns!. Soon thereafter machine guns were added to planes for air-to-ground attack or air-to-air fighting!. The first airplane machine guns were patented by Samuel Neal McClean!. He sold his rights to the Automatic Arms Company in late 1910!. Issac N!. Lewis working for the company later improved the technology on this airplane machine gun system!.

The first use of an airplane machine gun in combat was in August of 1914 with the first recorded airplane shot down in air-to-air fighting in October of that year!.

The firing of a machine gun THROUGH the propeller arc was first SUCCESSFULLY done by the Germans in 1915!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Before the first world war began!.
Briton and Germany and France made strong attempts in placing a machine gun on the planes in 1910 & 1911!. But it was the Wright B biplane in the states that came closest to doing it successfully!. Using a new type of air-cooled machine-gun which had just been invented by Colonel Isaac Newton Lewis and given official firing trials!. But the states didn't think much of it as they felt a reconnaissance plane didn't need one!. That's all planes were thought to be good for then!.
But the first known machine gun battle was on October 5th, 1914 when Sargeant Joseph Frantz engaged in air combat against a German pilot!.
Frantz was the pilot in a pusher bi-plane two seater and his mechanic Corporal Louis Quenault was the gunner operating a machine gun on a rack above the pilot!. The pusher bi-plane was a "Voisin"
From that point on it was an arms race for control of the skies and they just got better and better at killing each other!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

During the first world war!. At first it was a man that looked out and shot through the propellers so they were reinforced with metal so that they would not be shot off easily!. But it didnt work well so the germans invented a machine gun that was timed with the rotation of the propellars so that it only shot during the rotation when the propellar wasnt there!.
