Question: Question about the story behind the Christmas song by Jonah Lewie, Stop the Cavalry!?
Did the football kick about between German and English Soldiers in no mans land during a Christmas ceasefire in the 1st World War actually take place, or is it just a made up story!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

lt is actually true, they agreed to have a ceasefire for the day and played a game of football!.
Seems strange that they could do that, you'd think once they'd met face to face they couldn't then the following day start trying to kill each other!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know why I think this but I have a feeling it was something to do with Winston Churchill!. That may sound daft but he was a hero in the first world war and "can you stop the cavalry" might be a reference to something he did!. Not often right and probably wrong again, but something tells me I'm not that far removed!. Oh and the football match did take place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It did happen up and down the front-line!.Alas not everywhere and the bonne homme was not allowed to continue by those in higher ranks on both sides!. Many an officer and other ranks got in trouble for consorting with the enemy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
