I think I'd go with the journal!. You can take it and have many different entries, each one being a different date within the same year or in different years that shows how things are changing because of the railroad!. That way you can more show the progression of change through one persons eyes!. The beginning entry might be something like:

"Today I witnessed the building of a new angled road my brother Robert says is something called a railroad!. Doesn't really look like a could road to me, in fact I bet it's gonna be pretty rough to ride one what with all them boards they were laying down!. That is if one can even ride a wagon on it as they put a couple of really long metal bars they were laying down!. But Robert says that something called an engine draws carriages instead of horses!. He says it's gonna change everything around here!. I kinda doubt it though!."

Then maybe another entry could be dated ten years later and go something like:

"It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since the railroad went in!. The town has grown up so much and it's no longer centered as much on the river as it was back then!. The depot has become more important than the old boat landing ever was!. Back then it used to take folks half a day just by riding the river to move stuff down river to the city!. Today we've got trains coming and going every couple of hours doing that!."

You've got the research so your going to be able to do better than what I did here, but hopefully you get the idea!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From Shmoop History/Transcontinental Railroad

The men who built the railroad lived one of the biggest stories of the nineteenth century, and their work would remake the American West, bind the country together economically and culturally, and redefine for many the very scope of human enterprise!.

The best way to do an assignement like this is to figure out what you want to say before you figure out how to say it!. You need to collect what you think you want to put forward!. What message do you want to send, and what will you say (what are your sources)!. Once you have this then you can decide the best way to present it as you are asking!.

One thing you should do is decide whether you want to show the positive or negative impact on the south with the railroad as the railroad did help lead to the civil war!. The south was very much against the railroad at one point in america and you could show the negatives if you wanted!. SO the topic isn't necessarily that the railroad improved the south, just that it changed it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
