The Moscow Front was the result of the German advance to within 20 miles of the city and the subsequent battle to push the Germans back!. The Germans advanced rapidly across the Soviet Union and by 10th October 1941 (less than four months after the start of Operation Barbarossa - the invasion of the USSR)!. The population were mobilised to dig anti-tank ditches around the city and all government posts were evacuated well to the East - to the city of Kuibyshev!. Stalin was urged to move East as well, but he refused - sensing that his presence in the city would make people fight that bit harder!. The Soviets got lucky and the winter snows came early and then thawed - bogging them down in mud, the Germans were also at the end of their supply lines, and the Soviets were able to supply the city much more easily!. Then the Winter really started and the Germans dug in until the Spring!.
The STAVKA - the Soviet military high command - decided that now was the time for attack and in temperatures as low as -20C by january the Germans had been pushed back some 110 miles from the capital!.
