Question: History question-What was the 54th Massachusetts!?
I can't find this in the history book or my notes!. I remember learning it but I forgot what it was!. Anyone know!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was one of the first official colored regiments of the United States!. It was formed in 1863 during the Civil War, and earned respect when they valiantly charged Fort Wagner!.

The regiment was made famous by the movie "Glory" with Morgan Freeman and others!.

The 54th Massachusetts Colored Volunteers Infantry!. It was the first offical black unit authorized by the federal government!. Black soldiers led by white officers, the commander was Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who lost his life in what is now the best known battle of the 54th, the Battle of Fort Wagner!. Mostly made famous due to a movie, the 54th, other then being nearly wiped out at fort Wagner never really did all that much, there were other "colored" regiments, including federal ones, the 54th was militia, that did a lot more!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
