Dunkirk was in May, 1940, and was, in essence, the battle to hold off the German Army long enough for the British to evacuate their forces (as well as French, Dutch and Belgians) from the beaches!. It was a desperate holding action, and was aided by Hitler's pompous reliance upon the German Airforce to crush the retreating British Army!.

Normandy was June 6, 1944!. It was the invasion of France by the British and Americans!. It was successful, in no small part, because Hitler remained stubbornly convinced that he knew better than his generals, and that the real target of the invasion was Pais de Calais, North of ormandy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

D-Day is a term Day of Days!. It basically marks the day for the operation to begin!. Just like H-Hour is Hour of Hours marks the time of the beginning of a operation!.

I hadn't ever heard of the 'battle' at Dunkirk, I have heard of the 'miracle' of Dunkirk!. This was during the Nazi invasion of France when the allied soldiers were forced to retreat to the coast!. They were pinned down with a Nazi army on one side and the English Channel on the other so the British put out a call to any available boat to please go and help evacuate the allied soldiers!. Supposedly, the response from the British people was amazing!. Every fishing boat, cargo boat, pleasure craft or whatever else was seaworthy enough to cross the channel safely was brought over to Dunkirk where the allied forces had gathered to be ferried over to England!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

WWII began in September 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland!. Britain and France had signed mutual assistance treaties with Poland and both countries declared war on Germany after the invasion!. Hitler then turned his attention on the "low countries" (Belgium and Holland) and Britain sent the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) to help defend the Belgium and France borders!. Hitler cleverly outflanked the main French defensive line (the Maginot Line) and Belgium capitulated, leaving Britain and France alone!. Winston Churchill, by then the Prime Minister of Britain, wanted to keep the French fighting for as long as possible to give Britain time to mobilise for the anticipated invasion of Britain that would follow the fall of France!. Consequently several British divisions were ordered to hold impossible positions and to fight to the last man against overwhelming German forces all the way from the French/Belgian border back to the Channel port of Dunkirk!. Many regiments were sacrificed to a man to buy time for British mobilisation!. The evacuation of a huge part of the BEF from Dunkirk by the "little ships" is rightly a source of pride in individual and collective heroism in the face of mortal danger!. But equally heroic and selfless is the sacrifice of thousands of the BEF (and French forces) who died unremembered holding the German offensive at bay long enough for the rest of the BEF to escape!. In your project please remember this sacrifice as well as the better known evacuation!.

If you want a complete history of the Dunkirk battles and the evacuation you should buy, beg or borrow the book "Dunkirk" by Hugh Sebag-Monefiore!. See here: http://www!.amazon!.com/Dunkirk-Fight-Last!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
