Of course Canada helped during the war, Canada was part of the British Empire at the time, as a self governing dominon!.

The Japanesse wanted to become self-sufficent in its raw materials, there were significant rubber resources in Malaya, which was north of the small island of Singapour, and the Japanesse wanted the resources here!.

Singapour had started out as a simple tradingh outpost, but gre and gre (like Hong Kong) and before the second world war was fortrified and proclaimed in propoganda as a fortress which was inpenetrable, with massive guns facing outwards to the sea!. This was the assumed way that any invader would have to come (a rival of Britain from Europe, Germany, Italy, or whoever)!. When the fortifications were started this was true, but in the years before the war Malay (which is immediately North of Singapour) was exploited for rubber, most importantly massive amounts of roads were made, as trees were also felled!.

It was believed that the British were taken completly by surprise, this is not true I'm afraid, the commander of Singapur in 1942 had known exactly who was to be the future enemy, and how they were going to attack!. However he didn't make a fuss in Singapour not to create panic, and didn't believe the financially weak Empire would pay for more fortifications in the North!.

The result was that the Japanesse did eventually invade Malay in the north, pushed the British back, and reached Singapour in less than 72 hours!. The army had been told that the Japanesse simply weren't a threat, the reaslisation that they were (along with being so far from home, little equipment, and the unsuitability of most of the troops to jungle warfare resulted in this)!.
While the Japanesse surged towards Singapour there was general denial, Singapour fell shortly after the Japanesse invaded from the undefended northern end!.

Interestingly Churchill had been worried about the Japanesse invading Singapour, and sent to battleships, the Repulse, and the King George V (which engaged the Bismark with the Hood), both of these ships were sunk by Japanesse bombers, further depressing morale!.
A former Royal Navy admiral stated that he believed that Churchill thought that sending these ships would disuade the Japanesse from attacking at all:

Canada did participate in WWII, and was one of the Allies!.

At the start of WWII, after Pearl Harbor, Japan invaded Guam, Hong Kong, Wake Island, the Philippines, and Malaysia!. The British forces in Singapore were overwhelmed by the Japanese, and put up very little of a fight!. After they were taken prisoners by the Japanese troops they were mistreated and butchered by the Jap soldiers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Japan invaded Singapore because it was a strategic point in South East Asia!. It was a hub for the distribution of oil throughout Asia, and it was a base that they could form for an attack on Indonesia, the East Indies, which was one of the major producers of oil during those times!. The Japanese needed supplies of oil to continue their war and their objective of global domination!. Prior to that, the Japanese were heavily dependent on oil imported from the US, which obviously would dry up in the event of a Japan-US war, and which was becoming increasingly difficult to buy, with all economic embargoes that the US sanctioned on Japan for their attacks on China!.

The defense of Singapore was set up to repel a seaborne invasion!. The Japanese came down the Malay Peninsula and came in the back door which the British never foresaw!. They felt the terrain was too rough for an army to cross but the Japanese came across on foot and bicycles!. The Brits were stunned and gave up almost without a fight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
