Because being smart is not enough!. Edison was smart, and a great businessman!. Tesla was smarter, but was a lousy businessman and completely lacked any "interpersonal skills"; he hardly even noticed other people, let alone being pleasant to them! As a consequence he was rather taken advantage of by both Edison and Westinghouse!.!.!.
