Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
One thing to remember is that he believed more in the Union of America more than the abolition of slavery!. One of the reasons, besides moral, he wanted to abolish slavery is because there was a sectional struggle between the free and slave states!. He did not think the nation could "endure, half free, half slave" and believed that "a house divided cannot stand!." His main concern was the preservation of the Union, but he found the chance to emancipate slaves in the Confederacy in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
