Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: English is a Germanic language, and is not derived from Latin!. It does have a latin influence, but that did not come from the Roman Conquest of Britain!. The English language was brought to Britain by the ancestors of the English, the Angles Saxons and Jutes, Germanic tribes who invaded Britain after the Romans left!. In this context, the English are not Britons!. Infact the classification of the English as Britons probably only started in 1707 after the Act of Union!. The only remaining language in Britain that was active during the Roman occupation would be Cymraeg (Welsh) and that has very little, if any influence from the Romans either!. Latin, French and Greek have had influences on the English language, but everyday conversational English is still firmly Germanic!. Www@QuestionHome@Com I wouldn't necessarily say slang!. English has just evolved over the years, more so than other languages!. English was influenced by many languages and these influences are apparent in languages spoken today!. Try reading english in a chaucer novel, its almost like a foreign language!. And english is a language that has a hodge podge of many other foreign languages!.
