Slavery was abolished in the West, not in Africa!. It still continues to this day in Africa and only with great effort by Western nations has it been pushed into the shadows!.

The primary reason slavery was abolished was the realization by Westerners that people are people no matter what the color of their skin is, what religion they practice!. Until then it was a common assumption among almost all peoples that they were the superior race and that all others not of their kind were fit only for slaughter and slavery!. An attitude you still see in the Middle East and a few other places in the world and that still echoes among splinter groups in the West, Latin America, Asia and such!. The Chinese not even 30 years ago killed or kicked out all of those who tainted Chinese blood with Vietmese blood!. So the attitude is not all that submersed even in major nations!.

England and France led the way to abolishing slavery!. In the US many Christians viewed slavery as an abomination right from the start!. In the NE slavery never really took hold!. The US South lagged behind the rest of the West mostly because of an entrenched culture and because of economic necessity!. The invention of the cotton gin spelled the end of slavery in the US!. It might have taken a decade longer had the civil war not happened but it became cheaper for the land owner to share crop than to own slaves because of the cotton gin and as such abolishing slavery would have become economically possible with only the hard core of the culture opposing it!. One thing many people forget is that most Southern Whites did not own slaves!. There were many who fought against the slave trade, and these people were the heart of the undeground railroad!. A very tiny percentage of people owned most of the slaves!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with "draciron!." He makes many good points!.

As a sideline, with our new US President, the era of "Political Correctness" (PC) is going to revamp, revise, and rear its ugly, prejudiced, discriminatory head ; not necessarily because of our President's active participation, but of the racists and sexists that have a chip on their shoulder concerning "White and/or Male!." Therefore, it is up to historians to remind the racists against Whites and sexists against males that, "It was Whites that abolished Slavery and male dominated authority that curbed sexism in the U!.S!. And that equality has never been more closer to reality than today!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you mean in the western world, then the first time it was abolished due to religious reasons- the christian church did not encourage slavery

the second time it disappeared because it was not economically feasible- machine tools and seasonal hired workers were simply cheaper than keeping slaves

In the rest of the world it was abolished because the British navy and the US navy attacked every known place where slaves were kept or sold!.

BTW the slave trade is (again) alive and well today- a healthy man costs under 300$ in the (perfectly legal) slave market in Khartoum (Sudan)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Slavery was abolished because it was a really bad thing!. People being transported around the world, being paid nothing, being treated like animals at the behest of their masters!?!?!? That was why slavery was abolished!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Slavery was abolished because it was cruel, the slaves were treated terribly and were often abused, raped and killed by their masters!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
