Question: Does religion play a significant part in American Politics!?

Such a question- I would think it's rather obvious!. I am Canadian, but would say that from the beginning of America's initial settlement (Puritans- seeking religious freedom from Britain and therefore based their own laws on their own version of Protestantism) religion has played a very large role in American politics!.

In the twentieth century in particular, the rise of the religious right (and the support of the GOP by that same religious right) has played a huge role in American politics and the expression of those politics on foreign policy!. The addition of "In God We Trust" on your currency in the early fifties and "One Nation Under God" in your pledge of allegiance during the same period is an example of this!. Remember to contextualize the fifties- major Cold War happenings! SO, the American government sought to distinguish itself from the USSR on more than ideological differences, but rather along religious lines and added those words to make the Cold War a religious war of sorts (without almost any congressional or senatorial debate)!.

If you follow the rise of Barry Goldwater in the early 1960s and the 1964 election campaign (and a young actor, Ronald Reagan's speech in support of Goldwater) you will also get a sense of where Republicanism and American religious fervour was headed!. Reagan's popularity in the eighties was in some ways rooted in the sixties conservative backlash against liberalism!.

In terms of US Foreign Policy- many of the involvements in Central and Latin American during the eighties also had religious undertones on the part of the Presidency!.

You bet it does!. Congress opens every session with a prayer!. Thanksgiving was originally intended to be a holiday to give thanks to God (read Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation), and the founding fathers believed all humans were given rights by thier "creator" that could not be taken away by govenrment!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

definately!. some christian denominations are totally against abortion, any type of murder (assisted suicide included), etc!. so, this would cause people to vote either republican or democrat due to the beliefs of their church!. so, yeah!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
