A highway from Illinois to LA that was the main travel route of people leaving the mid-west for California!. Most people going that way traveled that highway!. It has now been either renovated in places or completely abandoned (almost) but at that time it was the only road that went straight through!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Old route 66 was a road that ran from Chicago to Santa Monica, Ca until the mid 60s!. This was the main route to go to Southern Ca!.
(an older route, also thru Chicago--the Lincoln Highway) is the oldest transcontinental route that goes from Times Square in NY to Lincoln Park in SF, Ca)!.

Old 66 was immortalized primarily by the Steinbech book "The Grapes of Wrath" when it was used during the Dust Bowl era by the Okies to go from Oklahoma to Ca to find the "promised land!." It should be noted that over 2/3 of the okies came back within 5 years because they found it was no better for them in Ca!.

Today, one can travel well over 1/2 the old route to view the way life was and will never be again!. It is a trip down nostalgia lane and well worth it for the scenic beauty and people you meet along the way!.

I have some great photos of the route that I am willing to share if you would email me at:
