Sir Isaac Newton is generally regarded as the founder of modern science!. His book "Philosophie Naturalis Principia Mathematica" is where he laid down the theory for which he is most famous - gravity!. The apocryphal story is that he was sitting under an apple tree when he was hit on the head by a falling apple which lead to him wondering why this happened!.

Newton also dealt with calculus, mechanics, optics (he invented the reflective telescope and worked out white light passing through a prism becomes multi-coloured) astrology and studied the speed of sound!. There were many, many other things too some of which include science in theology and a dabble in occultism!.
He is regarded by the Royal Society as the greater influence on science than any other, including Einstein!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There can be no "smartest" person because that person would have been limited to the educational teachings of his or her time!. Take for example Leonardo da Vinci, a genius in his own time and still marvelled at today!. But just imagine what he could have accomplished with today's technology!. The same could be said of Thomas Edison, Albert Einstien etc!.!.!. Perhaps there is still a greater mind yet to come, who will use the benfits of technology to radically effect the world around us!. Each of the great genisus of our history were great for a reason, however, comparing them to one another is as absurd as comparing apples and oranges!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In my opinion, every time someone asks a question like yours there is always someone who answers "Jesus," and occasionally someone answers "Muhammad!."

In my opinion it is truly a sad world where people routinely ignore the achievements of humans in favour of their religious leaders!.

Who was the smartest person ever to live!?

It is a two-way tie between Zeus and Odin!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably Archimedes!. His worked was so far advanced that it took about 1500 years to redo his work with calculus!. (His work was lost until the 1900's)!. His fundamental advances in geometry and other maths are unmatched, especially when you take into account the near vacuum in which he worked!.
Sir Isaac Newton was probably second or third, sharing the position with the German mathematician Gauss!.
Einstein is credited with what may the single greatest mental feat but the other three did more work in more fields!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There was never a single best!.!.!.!.!.each one was better than the other!.!.!.!. calling one best would be an insult to others!.!.!.!. and insulting the brightest mind that ever functioned would be a crime even terrible than a cold-blooded murder!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Perhaps John Stuart Mill, but that is only a guess!. There is really no way to know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
