General Sherman began his march to the sea, going out of Atlanta, GA to the Atlantic coast!. He started November 12, 1864!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sherman cut of from his supply line and began living off the land on his odyssey through Georgia!. Enroute to Savannah, he allowed his soldiers to rob, rape, and pillage small farms, large plantations, and towns and cities that came into his path!. In so doing, he left many old and sickly people, or small children and virtually helpless women homeless, without a morsel of food to eat and with only what clothes they had on their backs while facing the winter of 1864-65!. They left wide swathes of land virtually denuded of vegetation and devoid of any wildlife or farm animals!. Many of the Georgians who experienced the 'generosity' of the Union General would rather never have met him!. He would go into a farm and demand the lady of the house and her daughters, servants, or whomever prepare food for him and his staff!. After they ate to their fill, they would throw out the rest rather than let the property owners have any!. They would order their men to catch and butcher farm animals such as cows or chickens but only for the army to eat!.The rest would be killed and left on the ground to rot for several days!. If anyone not in the army were to attempt to get any meat or any food from the barn or corn crib, they were to be prevented at all hazards!. The army would stay for several days, all the while eating what they could and wasting what they couldn't!. When they finally left, anything they wanted they stole!. What they couldn't carry, they burned!.
So, if you want to celebrate one of the most heinous war crimes ever perpetrated on civilians by a military, go ahead!. Lincoln, Stanton, Grant, Sherman and Sheridan should all have been arrested, stood trial, and hung from the lamp posts of Washington!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
