Korematsu vs!. U!.S!. was the Supreme Court Case that declared that the presidential Executive Order that provided for Japanese internment in World War II was constitutional and did not violate people's rights!. Fred Korematsu was a Japanese immigrant who evaded reporting to the internment camps!. He was convicted and appealed to the Supreme Court about the Executive Order!. The Government said that internment was necessary in order to prevent espionage from Japanese spies!. The Court agreed!.

According to Wikipedia, "the Korematsu ruling is significant both for being the first instance of the Supreme Court applying the strict scrutiny standard to racial discrimination by the government and for being one of only a tiny handful of cases in which the Court held that the government met that standard!."

It should be noted, however, that Korematsu got his conviction overturned in 1983, 40 years after the fact!.

In regards to your cartoon, just tell the story of why Korematsu found himself before the Supreme Court during World War II!. also mention the Japanese Internment!. I'd mention the Court's decision and how it pertained to the continuing Japanese internment!.

Cheers!

It is a law suit brought about by a gentleman named Korematsu who sued the US for the property he had given up at the behest of the US government when he was moved to an internment camp on the West coast after the Japanese invasion portion of WW2!. All the Japanese were herded into these internment camps with only what they could carry!. When the war was over they did not get their land and/or houses back!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
