Question: American imperialism!? !?

I'm researching on how American imperialism is a negative effect!.
What where some specific effects and crimes it had on humanity!. Why was it so wrong!? What did it do to countries!?

The most blatant act of American Imperialism would probably be the Spanish American War, when Cuba and the Phillipines were taken away from Spain!. The Americans never intended to "free" these countries, nor did they intend to make them American States!. They simply desired the markets and access to agricultural and mineral wealth!.

Cuba was controlled as a client state up until the 1950s, while the Phillipinos fought against us in a brutal war very much like Vietnam!. Eventually the American soldiers took up a policy of exterminating every male between 14 and 55 years of age in certain regions!.

Mark Twain was, among many others, opposed to this land grab and wrote very strong criticisms of US foreign policy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wow, this is a big question!. You're going to have to narrow it down some if you don't want to author a set of encyclopedias!. You also have to define what you mean by imperialism!.

If you define imperialism as the set of behaviors which stem from the interests of an established empire, the US has never been imperialistic!.

If you define imperialism as the advocacy of the imperial spirit, once again the US need not apply!.

If you define imperialism, as Communists often do, as the advocacy of capitalist-democratic society, well in this not very accurate sense, the US is definitely imperialistic!.

I took those definitions from the Oxford English dictionary, but if you take Webster's definition: "The practice of one country extending its control over the territory, political system, or economic life of another country," there are a few examples!. The most notable and clear cut is the case of the Philippines!.
