Question: Why do people tell Blacks to get over slavery, and Native Americans, to get over the genocide!?
As an African American, I feel the need to have this issue be addressed!. Why is it that society tells Blacks to get over genocide and Native Americans to get over the genocide!? Yet when it comes to the Jewish people (No offence to the Jewish people), people tend to show more compassion for them, (and don't give me the excuse that it was because the Holocaust was more recent and over 6!.5 million people were murdered)!. These were events in History that Affected All three groups of people, and yet people tell us to get over it when it comes to Blacks and Native Americans!. All events were crimes against Humanity, and were a violation of Human rights!. Could it be that society doesn't want to feel guilty for the pain and suffering they've caused!? Could it be that they widh not to be reminded about the near extinction of a people that were native to this land!? Could it be that they wish to forget they centuries of pain, torture, rape, and murder of a people, taking away their history and destroying their culture!? Why is it!? Some one please explain!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

“Different times with different mentalities” is a myth!.

The Native American genocide didn’t happen hundreds of years ago!. It has been happening for hundreds of years!.

Our children were stolen and abused, Our people were sterilized!. Under the belief that Native Americans were only suited to manual skills, we were denied an academic education!. Native American lands and money are still being stolen
-----------------

Up until the 1980s Native children were forcibly taken from their families and placed in boarding schools!. !. Children were physically abused, sexually abused and murdered!. Documents show more than 50% of the children died in those schools!.

We were successful in getting The Indian Child Welfare Act, passed in 1978 to prevent the state and county welfare agencies from stealing our children and placing them in in non–Indian homes!. The government likes to take credit for ending discriminatory practices!. That’s far from the truth!.

I do agree with you!.!.!.Black people and First Nation people are expected to overcome the gravest historical injustices which have left an indelible mark on our society, but, I do believe you must be careful of following anti-semitic rhetoric when referring to the reaction to the Holocaust!. Racism, xenophobia is reprehensible in all its guises, and genocide is genocide no matter the colour of skin or the beliefs held by the people murdered!.
An I disagree with the statement that genocide has not been perpetrated against First Nation peoples or Afro Caribbean/Black Americans!.!.!.some estimates say millions lost their life being transported to the Americas during the slave trade!.!.!.the Carib people of the Caribbean were decimated by the EuropeansWww@QuestionHome@Com

in the 16th,17th,18th and 19th centuries people had a different outlook towards others ,their thinking was that blacks, indians or anyone of colour were inferior to whites so their treatment was acceptable, but in the mid 20th century we were supposed to be more liberal to others and what happened in the holocaust was horrific to all those that witnessed it,so to answer your question, different times with different mentalitiesWww@QuestionHome@Com

I haven't heard anyone tell native americans to get over genocide!. But to me they are two different things and not equivalent at all!.

Every race has been enslaved or mistreated at one time or another!.

Women have been opressed and treated as less than humans for thousands of years!. At some point, one needs to recognize the harm that happened in the past, but move on!.

As far back as we know people have invaded, killed and enslaved their neighbors!. Should the Egyptians want reparations from the Persians !?
The French, Germans, Spaniards, English, etc from the Romans !? The Egyptians should double dip!.

Yes bad things happened!. That was the past!.

Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well it's important to remember it, but keep in mind that it's unfair for blacks to blame whites today for what our ancestors did we don't own slaves!. Bring it up and getting angry about it only makes things worst!. It breeds more hate on both sides!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

First off,,, No one ever tried to eradicate the black or Indian population off the U!.S!. also,,, America was part of the effort to stop Hitler's attempt!.!.AND SUCCESSFUL! So where the heck are you getting this information!? Go back to school!

also,, It was their own race that sold their people into slavery!Www@QuestionHome@Com

short answer is!.!.white privilege!. don't believe me!? look at who says this!. i've never seen a non white person say "get over it"!. i'd love to get over it personally, but seems there is still this foot on my throat called racism, both individual and institutional!.
also, people think the injustices are in the past!. wrong!. i've got family that were taken away from our home and put in residential schools and abused!. tens of thousands of children were killed in these schools, most of which only closed less than 30 years ago!. our women are victims of violence more than 5x the national rate and rarely is anyone even arrested, let alone jailed!. the average life expectancy on a rez today, for a native man is 45!. we are still not allowed the same freedoms of religion as most other people!. we are still being forced to relocate so that the government and private corporations can take even more from us!.

get over it!? can you get over someone hitting you in the head with a hammer if they don't first stop hitting you!?

some people here need to get a ******* education!. i managed to get one despite the problems!. what's your excuse!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree, and your theory is about as close as we will come to finding out for sure!. I sympathize with Jewish people, but other groups have had it just as bad if not worse!. I'd rather that instead of support for Israel being a part of a presidential litmus test, support for Native Americans had more priority!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't disagree with you on many of your points!. I don't expect any people to forget their heritage or forget their history!. I don't expect you to "get over it"!. All of those things are part of history that none of us, no matter our race or ethnicity should "get over" at the risk that we forget how wrong they were and allow any form of a repeat offense!.

I don't know how to "fix" what happened to the African-Americans, to the Native Americans or to the Jews!. I don't know how to turn back the clock and make those horrors never happen!. Unfortunately, all I can do is learn from it!.

I will say, though, it is sometimes difficult to be painted with the same brush as those who were responsible for something that happened 100 years before my birth or in the case of the Holocaust, 30 years before!. My family never owned a slave, nor am I of German descent!. I am, however, the 4th great-granddaughter of a Native American which "doesn't count" as far as offering me Native American status!.

It's hard to know ones ancestors suffered so much!. I am sorry that anyone has ever told you to "get over it"!. Rather, we should all learn to accept history as something we can't change, learn from the mistakes that were made and to live each day to change the things we can so that our children have a better world!.

Www@QuestionHome@Com

You are right, in a way, but there is one factor that you and many others seem to forget!.
At the times these things happened, the same people that were profiting from the ill treatment and dealing of slaves, or the killing and repressing of the Indians were doing similar things to their own people!.
Look at the history of the poor and lower classes in Britain at these times!.
They were being starved, or paid dreadful wages to work in appalling, deadly conditions!. They were thrown into workhouses, debtor's prisons or ordinary prisons for the slightest reason!. Children were beaten and even hung for petty crimes!. Stealing a handkerchief would incur the Death penalty! Illness was rife and went untreated!. People were discriminated against by their class, not their colour!

The difference is that the descendants of the people behind this are still running your country and mine! That is why little mention is made of it and why there is so little sympathy for you!.
The Jews are a very close knit and often wealthy community, that is why they get more sympathy from those in power!. But is it really sincere!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

because people are who don't have to directly deal with the effects of these things think that they [the injustices that these groups of people have suffered] are figments of our imagination!. i have come across many people (sorry to say!.!.!.!.white) who say that we are pretty much on equal ground so we should get over it!. but i feel that if you can say that we are "pretty much" equal then we are definately no where near equal!.

EDIT: SO WHAT DO YOU CALL THE SLAVE TRADE YOU IDIOT!? MILLIONS OF AFRICANS WERE STOLEN FROM THEIR HOME, RAPED, BEATEN, FORCED TO LOSE THEIR CULTURE, LANGUAGE AND NAMES! HOW IS THAT NOT MURDER OF AN ENTIRE CULTURE!?!?!? WHAT DO YOU CALL THE SYSTEMATIC INFECTING OF A GROUP OF PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU WANT THEIR LAND THAT THEY HAVE LIVED ON FOR ALL OF KNOWN MEMORY!?!?!? FORCING PEOPLE TO NOT USE THEIR LANGUAGE UNTIL IT SERVES THE PURPOSE OF THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT DURING WAR, THEN THEY SHOULD KNOW IT!?!?!? HOW ABOUT YOU READ A HISTORY BOOK BEFORE YOU SPEAK FURTHER!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
