Question: In pictures and images captured in Landing in Normandy(WWII) are a lot of dirigibles!. Why use them for!?

These are "Barrage balloons" - they were used to deter low flying aircraft, in particular to deter dive-bombers, and low flying ground-attack aircraft!. Many of the balloons were carried by ships, as dive-bombing was the main pinpoint bombing technique in the 1940's and balloons were also used to protect the prefabricated harbour facilities used by the allies to get men and materials onto the beaches!.
If aircraft were forced to fly higher to avoid the balloons (in fact, to avoid the cables of the balloons, which were the danger!.) then not only did it make the bombing or strafing attacks less accurate, but made the aircraft more vulnerable to anti-aircraft gunfire Www@QuestionHome@Com

Those balloons had two purposes: they had steel cables attached to them that flailed around waiting for an unwary Luftwaffe pilot!. also, the balloons were to help deflect bombs dropped from above!. They were referred to as "barrage balloons!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
