To the modern world!?

Definately England, it gives the world it's most important language, English, created the BRitish Empire of 1/4 of the world's surface!.

The English political system that was established allowed power to slip from the hands of the King, to the people (via their parliament) this idea of power to the people in the medieval world was quite different to continental europe!.
Don't forget the British Empire made many innovations, and unlike the Romans these weren't copied from other civilisations, furthermore unlike Rome there wasn't technological stagnation and regression (building techniques and technologies had declined by the end of the roman empire, although still not by as much as occured in the dark ages)!. Can you name one notable Roman mathematician or scientist!?

Although many nations have led to the modern world, it is quite impossible to imagine the modern world without the English speaking peoples who dominate it!. If there had been no British Empire, there would have been no United States today!.

also "first true superpower" I disagree!. Certainly America is the world's first HYPERPOWER (a superpower with no nation equal to it since the collapse of the USSR)!. However Spain of the 16th century was certainly a superpower by the standards of the time, it could deploy ships and men anywhere!. Moreso the British Empire of the 19th, which could essentially outweighy any regional power in any region of the world at one point (compared to the waning American political influence over the world)!.

Germany was also a superpower at one point aswell, massive population, efficent workforce, military!.
Capable of deploying millions of men in the second world war, aswell as assembling the world's most powerful army aswell!.!.!.!.

"Spread the idea of liberty" - this is debatable!. IN it's existence American certainly provided a blueprint of principles for other nations to look up!. But the annhilation of the NAtive Americans and replacement of them on their land!? Not to mention the fact that the democratic United States abolished slavery three decades after the British Empire!.

All of these things are debatable!. The spreading of the latin alphabet to so many European nations is also impressive, as is their legacy in literature!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
