1!. During the twenties, the main weaknesses in the economy were low prices for agricultural goods, high indebtedness--largely on the part of farmers, unequal distribution of wealth (the rich were raking it in and the lower classes were not getting their fair share), over speculation in the stock market and the slow payment of war debts by European countries!.

If you think any of this sounds eerily familiar, it's because many of these problems are the same ones that led up to our current financial crisis!. I used to tell my students that we were ripe for another Great Depression!.

None of these problems alone were serious enough to cause the Great Depression by themselves but, taken as a whole, these combined into a powerful economic anchor which was exacerbated by the stock market crash of 1929 and the drought that engulfed the nation's midsection in the early 1930s (the drought was exacerbated by poor farming practices)!.

2!. The U!.S!. got involved in WWI because the conflict threatened to reach across the Atlantic and onto the shores of America!.

The German use of unrestricted submarine warfare (as well as blockades used by both sides) threatened U!.S!. trade in Europe!. The most well know instance of American interests being harmed by submarine warfare was the Lusitania incident where a British passenger was sunk by a German sub!. The Lusitania was carrying some U!.S!. citizens who were killed!.

The real clincher for U!.S!. involvement in WWI was the Zimmerman Telegram!. This communique offered Mexico the return of a large portion of U!.S territory that had been taken from them in the Mexican-American War in exchange for attacking the U!.S!. There is debate as to wether or not this telegram was a fabrication or not, but the point is moot, it was the final straw that forced isolationist America to enter the war on the side of the allies!.

Goals, goals !. !. !. Well, maintain the balance of power!. Yeah, I'm drawing a blank!.

The U!.S!. didn't join the League of Nations because they were afraid of becomming entangled in alliances that they might not agree with in the future!. It wasn't until WWII that the US finally accepted the idea that it was a global power and was unable to remain neutral and seperate from the other countries of the world!. When Jefferson was inagurated, he famously said, "peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none," and the U!.S!. struggled to maintain that isolationist viewpoint until they had no other choice!.

1) What were the weaknesses in the economy of the roaring Twenties, and why were they serious enough to cause The Great Depression!?

1!. Low prices for agricultural products!. 2!. Low wages for workers!. 3!. Unequally distributed wealth!.

2)Why did the U!.S get involved in World War 1!?

On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to request a declaration of war against Germany!. Wilson cited Germany’s violation of its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and its attempts to entice Mexico into an alliance against the United States, as his reasons for declaring war!. On April 4, 1917, the U!.S!. Senate voted in support of the measure to declare war on Germany!. The House concurred two days later!. The United States later declared war on Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917!.

What were some of the goals during the war!?
Win the war

Why didn't the U!.s join the League of Nations!?

President Wilson and many others felt that the League was a necessary part of avoiding further bloodshed like that seen in World War I!. Wilson even received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1920 for his work!. However, in the end, the United States didn't join the League because the US Senate refused to ratify the treaty in large part fearing a loss of American independence!.

Hi Mike, let me see if I can help you a little!.

1!. The bill from the war (World War One) had not yet come due!. The men returned home and life was good!. People seemed to still be celebrating their victory and not minding the store when it all came crashing down!. The men returned home and industrialization allowed both the economy and communities to grow in leaps and bounds!. America seemed to be the center of innovations!. Production was up as was consumerism!. People began to buy and relied more on credit!. Production out paced consumption as did credit in the form of debt to income ratios!. One good drought and the bread basket/heartland of America seemed to wither on the vine!.

2!. The U!.S!. had quietly been involved in the war for some time!. There was the American Volunteer Group (LaFayette Escadrille) as well as war materiel shipments to France and England!. President Wilson had promised to keep America out of the war, but when Germany finally declared unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic, the U!.S!. was finally drawn into the war in earnest!. The sinking of the Lusitania was the catylist!.

As for the U!.S!. staying out of the League of Nations, it was simply a returning to isolationism!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
