Osama bin Laden is a member of a wealthy Saudi Arabian family who had a major construction business in the Middle East!.
During the 1980s he went to Afghanistan to fight the Russians who were occupying the country!.
At this time he was supported by the USA who helped to train and arm his fighters who were called the Mujaheddin and who later became known as the Taliban!.
When the Russians left Afghanistan all of these weapons and fighters were abandoned by the Americans and the country descended into chaos !.
When the Americans set up large military bases in Saudi Arabia in 1990 to fight the first Gulf War against Saddam Hussein, bin Laden saw this as an insult to Islam to have so many infidels near Mecca and he declared a holy war against the Americans and their allies!.
