Personally, I don't think being infamous or famous as a murderer has anything to do with the number of victims, or even how they were killed!. It has to do with whether or not the name of the murderer captures people's imagination, evokes a certain reaction when it is spoken, and how well known the person is - are they still spoken about (internationally) long after their crimes were committed!?

In that case, the most famous murderer to the present day would have to be Jack the Ripper!. OK, so he only killed five canonical victims (there are lots who say there were more)!.

However, he is possibly the best known
- 166 non-fiction books alone have been published about him between 1888 and 2007
- he has 'starred' in at least 38 films and TV series between 1917 and 2001,
and was the first mass media serial killer - with people as far afield as North America, continental Europe and hte Southern hemisphere reading about his crimes via telegraph while the blood still stained the pavement!.
- in 2008, the 120th year of his crimes, there are still books, games, souvenirs and other commemorative items being released!.

The reason Jack will live on!? He wasn't caught!. That is the very thing that will ensure he remains the most infamous murderer - he is faceless, and therefore the possibilities for theorising about him and his victims is endless!.

Modern day mass murderers are always compared to Jack the Ripper and his crimes - eg: Peter Sutcliffe (the Yorkshire Ripper) and many others in Europe and America!.

Most interesting: Ed Gein - a serial killer was known for grave robbery, necrophilia, cannibalism, sadism, death fetishism!. He used his victims flesh to sew up lamp shades and his couch!.

Most famous: Charlie Manson is by far the most famous of all murderers!. Charles and his "Family" murdered many people!. Here is a list of the victims;
