WOMEN IN MASONRY

The issue of women in Freemasonry is one which can be quite controversial!. We approach this subject with what we hope is an understanding of various points of view!. We take no position ourselves except to remind each Mason that they are bound by their obligations and the rules, regulations and edicts of the Grand Lodge to which they belong! Our presentation is primarily for those outside of the fraternity who seek additional information!.

Depending on one's location in the world as well as one's philosophical views, this issue may be dealt with much differently!. We'll try here to sort out the various viewpoints in a objective manner!.

To the majority of Freemasons today (dominated by US and Canadian brethren), the concept of women becoming Masons is, for all intents and purposes, an anathema!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The organization known as "The Order of the Eastern Star" is the women's group associated with the Freemasons!. These women do not have to have any ties to Freemasons in order to join!. Women are not allowed to become Freemasons except in a few countries in Continental Europe, like Italy for example!. Freemasonry is a fraternal, or "Brotherhood", organization and women have their own "Sisterhoods" as they are called!. The children of both organizations have groups they may join as well if they want!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In regular freemasonry the closest thing to the women's part is the Eastern Star, or Jobs Daughters or Rainbow for Girls for young women!. I should note there are also a few Lodges for women that operate in England that are considered regular in all aspects by the UGLE except for the fact that they are women, however they are not in amity with UGLE!.

There is a version of French freemasonry that permits women to join!.

Freemasonry as we know it today was officially born in June of 1717, when four Lodges gathered in London to form a Grand Lodge!. From England where it spread quickly, it was introduced in France after 1735!. There, as in England, because a woman's legal status was that of a minor with no civil rights, women were refused membership in the Lodges!. This did not sit well with women belonging to the nobility and even with some men, who noted the injustices in the arguments used to keep women away from the Craft!.
