Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Slaves like Douglas that understood what freedom meant were resentful at best by the white celebration of Independence Day and the notion of freedom!. Essentially, while slaves lived in the United States of America, supposedly a free country, they in fact could not join in the celebration of the holiday, as they were not free!. Therefore, the Fourth of July to the slave meant nothing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
