Hawthorne found the letter while looking through some boxes, and based the novel The Scarlet Letter from that!. Hawthorne had a tendency to play hard and loose with historical fact (he strayed from it rather quickly in his writings), so I don't think that there actually would have been a classification system of sinners!.
Plus, the Puritans had a tendency to see the devil everywhere and in everything!. Mostly likely a woman like Hester would have been accused of being a witch and tried as opposed to just being branded an adulteress!. And once you were accused of being a witch, there was so much circumstantial evidence accepted in the courts of Salem that it would have been impossible to refute them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
