Those weren't helmets, those were brainwave deactivators!. Most commonly associated in today's society with American voters!. And American Idol edicts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In a word, warmth!.

Pilots of all nations wore flying helmets, usually of lined leather!. This was never intended to keep them alive in the event of a crash!. Though it incorporated hands-free radio etc, it's primary aim was to keep the head warm!. It is a known fact that a significant proportion of human body-heat exits via the head!. This is why people wear hats in cold weather!.

It is also known that temperature decreases with altitude!. WW2 planes, zipping along at several hundred miles an hour three miles up were damn chilly places, so flight-crew wrapped up warm!.

It would do a kamikaze pilot no good if he froze before even sighting a target!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The fact that headphones were an integral part of their headgear and were needed for communication is probably the most pragmatic reason!. Head warmth to maintain concentration was another!. Another is that the flight helmet was a part of the uniform so a pilot going to his death would want to be in full uniform!.

Let there be no mistake!. These units were expected to fly their planes into enemy ships and die!. The Kamikaze program wasn't a secondary option for disabled planes or the like it was a deliberate method of attack that cost Japan approximately 5,000 pilots!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

so that the air pressuse doesnt make them black out before they crash into their designated target!. also, pilots werent spicifically chosen to be kamikaze!. they are all regular pilots!. if the odds were against him, he would use the plane as a last resort thing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In case they crashed!. Everyone for some reason has this image that kamikaze pilots original intentions was a suicide type thing, truth is, they were only told to crash their plane into an enemy ship if they were going down because they seen it as a form of honor!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Even though the plan was that they would crash into an enemy ship, they needed some protection to keep them alive until they got there!. If you're the side that's sending the kamikaze pilots out, you don't want them dying until they're SUPPOSED to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They were special tinfoil lined helmets that prevented free thought!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
