Basically what happened was the Indians had left the reservation so the military was sent to bring them back essentially at all cost!. Custer did not have orders to attack but he did have orders to not let them get away, if you ever served in the military you know this doesn't mean speak gently to them in a persuasive tone!. You're correct that Custer didn't know how many there were, in those days reconnaissance was limited to one or two men riding ahead to look things over!.

The aftermaths you listed are correct as well, the Battle of Little Bighorn may have been seen as an Indian victory at the time but it really was the end of their way of life!. When they retreated into Canada they were cold and starving which is why they came back to the U!.S!. only to have their leaders arrested and the rest of them put back on the reservation!. SFAIK there was some gold discovered in the Black Hills- which meant a lot of people started digging up the mountains!. The territory was officially a Sioux area but fighting between the Indians and the diggers meant the US had to intervene- and (politics being what they were) there was no way they could intervene on the side og the Indians!. The Indians were given a "peace offer" - leave the Black Hills or else - and then the war started!.
Custer was not a brilliant thinker- he divided his forces and attacked the Sioux camp from different directions- and got anihilated!. In the process he wasted practically his whole family (his brothers and brothers in law were all in the same unit)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just to clarify a another point; Custer dividing his forces into 3 groups was a tactic he had successfully used against the Cheyenne in an action on the Arkansas River 3 years earlier!. This time it didn't because he waited and attacked long after Reno had begun his engagement!.
The delay allowed Crazy Horse to attack and pin down Reno first and then attack Custer with his full force!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Custer wanted to be president and wanted a big military victory to launch his political career!. Unfortunately for him, unlike his victory at the "Battle" of the Washita River, at Little Bighorn he wasn't facing mostly unarmed women and children!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
