1642 – 51) Armed conflict in the British Isles between Parliamentarians and supporters of the monarchy (Royalists)!. Tension between Charles I and the House of Commons had been building for some time, and after his unsuccessful attempt to arrest five members of Parliament, both sides prepared for war!. The first phase of the wars (1642 – 46) was initially characterized by inconclusive encounters, but victories by Parliamentarian forces under Oliver Cromwell at the Battles of Marston Moor and Naseby turned the tide!. In 1646 the Royalist forces were disbanded!. In 1647 Charles I negotiated with a Scottish group for assistance, starting the second phase of the wars, a series of Royalist rebellions, and a Scottish invasion!. All were defeated, and Charles I was executed in 1649!. The fighting continued, and Royalist forces under Charles II invaded England in 1651!. Parliamentary forces defeated the Royalists at Worcester in 1651 and Charles II fled abroad, effectively ending the civil wars!. The wars' political consequence was the establishment of the Commonwealth and Protectorate!. See also New Model Army, Solemn League and Covenant!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
