Question: Why was singapore such an important defence point for australia in WW11!?

Singapore was the Gibraltar of the East, Britain's main base and the one place everyone assumed the Japanese couldn't take!. It was supposed to have provided protection for points south, including Australia, but it was actually overrun rather easily and ultimately did little to defend Australia!.

There's only a little information here, but it has lots of links to other sites!.
