The Battle of Forts Jackson and St!. Philip (18 April 1862 – 24 April 1862) in the American Civil War was the decisive preliminary for the capture of the city of New Orleans by the Union naval force under Flag Officer (later Admiral) David G!. Farragut!.

The government of US President Abraham Lincoln assembled a combined force of 18,000 soldiers!.The Union Army was called the "Army of the Gulf"!.

At noon on April 25, Farragut anchored in front of New Orleans; Forts Jackson and St!. Philip, isolated and continuously bombarded by the mortar boats, surrendered on April 28!. Soon afterwards soldiers under Maj!. Gen!. Benjamin Butler occupied the city, which surrendered without fighting!. The Union forces engraved "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved" on the statue of Andrew Jackson that honored him for the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812!.

The amount of troops on the CSA side that situated in Fort Jackson & Fort St!. Philip were unknown!.
