The plantation was an ongoing process in the late-16thC and throughout the 17thC whereby British (frequently Scottish) people were allowed, even actively encouraged, to move onto lands in Ireland!.

The process was begun by a number of rebellions in Ireland; following these events those Irish leaders involved were dealt with with the harshness that was standard for the day!. The lands taken from these traitors were used as the basis for the "planting" of more loyal and industrious groups of people from the mainland!.

Due to their alien language, geographical concentration in the north, protestant faith and bourgois tendancies they remained a people apart from the Irish about them!.

now this is interesting!. At one time "Scot" meant Irish, as in Duns Scotus the philosopher!. Over 1000 years ago, Gaelic speaking Irish migrated to Scotland, and when Scotland was unified the country became known as Scotland although the Irish settlements were only in the West of Scotland!. In 1603 James VI of Scotland also became king of England!. Following a rebellion he decided to encourage English speaking Protestants, from both England and Scotland to settle in Ulster, England and Scotland being mostly protestant and Ireland mainly Catholic!. A further wave of Scots migrated to Ulster in the 1690s following a famine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They were termed " planters " when some 150 000 lowland Scots settled in Ulster between 1608 and the early 1700s !. The lands of the native families ( O'Neil and O'Donnell) were declared to be in the King's hands A Committee was appointed in London to prepare a detailed scheme of plantation and in 1609 they recommended that the planters should outnumber the native Irish !. Many Scots were given parcels of land which they tenanted after the native Irish had been evicted Those who had been evicted were only allowed to live on in special lands which had been allocated to favoured Irishmen , the Church or to servitors or military officers who had served against O'Neil !. Many Scots came back over in the 18th and 19th century and settled from whence they came , mainly in Ayrshire , Wigtown and and Kirkudbright in the south west of Scotland !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

These are descendants of people who were moved from Scotland to Ireland after the victory of the Protestant Dutchman, William of Orange, in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne!.
The Scots were all Protestants and were given the land of the Irish Catholics so that there would always be a Protestant upper class to oppress the Catholics!.
This has been the cause of the political troubles ever since!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
