Several European powers wanted to see the South win for financial reasons, but none felt the south could win the war since they were entirely dependent on the North for iron and steel!. The North was fielding an Army and a Navy that was incredibly large and yet the Northern industries were growing while the South was falling apart!.
After seeing the battle of Antietam no foreign nation wanted any part of our war!.
In 1858 a meeting was held in Paris and America was denounced by 11 different European nations as "Morally Inferior" because we permitted slavery!.
Europeans wanted cotton and tobacco, not a reputation for supporting slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The British and French governments themselves actually did want to intervene in the American Civil War due to their need of the South's cotton for their manufacturing in Europe!. I'm just going to list some of the reasons!.

- The populations of these countries were totally against slavery and wouldn't support intervention!. While Europe didn't have democracy, when the population is totally against something the government isn't likely to go ahead and do it!.

- Europe also began to depend on corn and wheat coming from the middle states which were located in the Union!. The way they looked at it was we can either have a few textile mills go out of business or our whole population can starve to death!.

- They actually did seriously consider stepping in on behalf of the South up until the Battle of Antietam where the Union finally displayed it's fighting ability against the South!. At first the South was militarily trouncing the North and Europe viewed the Union as weak until they repelled Lee's advance into Maryland at Antietam and at that point they took a step back and configured that the North was a force to be reckoned with and the war wasn't going to be easily won!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Errr!.!. the Civil War occurred from 1861-1865, so it defintely wasn't because of debt or the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleon was in power only from 1801-1815)!.

When you say Europe, it's mostly Great Britain - the US was mostly tied to Great Britain for trade/etc!. But for one thing, it was a moral isse!. Great Britain had abolished slavery years before the American Civil War, so if they had decided to join for the cause of morality, it would have been with the North!.

But it was more political!. Yes, the South did do a lot of trading with Great Britain - Southern cotton propelled the textile industry of Great Britain!. But Great Britain knew that the South was going to lose!. Additionally, the North explicitly told Great Britain to stay out of it!. The second was the stronger reason and kept Great Britain (along with the rest of Europe) NEUTRAL on the issue of the American Civil War!. Economically speaking, Great Britain did gain other methods of getting cotton (from its OTHER colonies) so its not like the textile industry suffered at all!.

Overall, the North, aka the stronger side (for MANY Reasons) told Great Britain to stay out, and so it did!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
