Question: What did thomas Jefferson mean when he drafted the declaration of independants!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
First, it had to be rewritten several times (mostly due to the excessive use of profanity)!. When Jefferson wrote of "Freedom", he was referring to money!. Those that have it, have a wider selection from which to choose!. Those that have little or no money, are enslaved to their creditors!. (Bill Gates can have just about any car he wants, the rest of us, have to be a little more "down to earth" in our wants and needs!.)

Jefferson was informing the King that Americans were no longer going to pay his taxes!. At that time, the economy in America had grown over the prior 100 years, by 1000%!. The colonists were now financially supporting England, not England supporting the colonies!. There'd been no policy of emigration from England to the colonies and with a birth rate four times that of England, the colonies were getting quite crowded!. The French and Indian / Seven Year's War had been fought and won, but the King still saw fit to limit the westward expansion and in 1763 put out a proclamation prohibiting movement into the French (and Native Indian) owned Ohio River Valley!. It also forbid the colonists from doing business (more specifically buying real estate) with the French or the Native Indians!. What made it even more intolerable, was that anyone who'd already moved into and settled in the ORV was being forced to move back into the eastern colonies (that were already heavily over crowded)!. The bill for the war came due, and having been fought on two continents, it was rather large!. England looked to the colonies to pay it!. They were after all, the ones who most benefitted from that war AND, England never wanted to fight it in the first place!. The crown began leveling a series of taxes on the colonies!. The colonists had no voice in Parliament and for the amount of money they were paying out, felt they should have an equal ear with the king!. Neither the King nor Parliament saw it that way!. With all of this in mind, the colonies decided to break from the mother country!. They asked Jefferson to write the letter!. The colonists wrongly believed that when they cut off the cash flow to England, that England would essentially shrivel up and wither away!. They felt they were now making enough money that they could support themselves and a war effort if need be!. Ultimately, the war proved more costly than they'd imagined!. They had to turn to France for financial support and at wars end, even with England having lost, she refused to leave the continent and the new found country of the United States was too poor to do anything about it!.

Lots more info than you'd asked for, but it should give you good insight into what was happening at the time!. Jefferson was talking about money and he meant to tell the king to go pound sand!.

Love the thumbs down!. Did I mention that my degree is in History!? A good book to read is "Dangerous Nation" by Robert Kagan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You should read his biography, to get a good understanding of this great man!. John Kennedy got together forty nine Nobel prize winner's!. He stated that in our entire history there had never been such a collection of intellect, other than when Jefferson sat alone at his desk!.
