The Celtic tribes in Britain were actually a lot more advanced than we give them credit for, particularly in Southern Britain!. There was a very large colony in what is now Colchester and evidence of coinage being used prior to the Roman invasion!. Shops would have included pottery, blacksmiths, clothes and food!. There is also evidence that items were being imported ie Amber from the Baltics, and imported items would have been available either from travelling salesmen in the more remote regions or from the shops in major towns!.

Once the Romans invaded, those celtic tribes who joined the invaders would have had even more to offer in their shops (ie further goods imported, this time from Italy)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There would not have been shops such as we know them!. People would have traded where they carried out their particular craft - the blacksmith from his forge, the pottery maker from his kiln!. There may have been small markets where exchange of things like food and clothes took place!. However, most people would have lived on a subsistence basis, growing their own food, keeping animals not only to provide food but wool from sheep and leather from the hides of cows!. Exchange would have only been necessary in high status items like weapons and jewellery!. Nobles would probably have had members of their household to provide such items!. We really know very little about life in pre-Roman Britain!. There would have been some limited exchange via money, however, as there is evidence of Roman coins circulating prior to the invasion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am in agreement with Kell E, the trading network that Britain had with Europe and beyond was a lot more sophisticated than people give it credit!. It was news from travellers and traders that brought tales of a misty island across the sea that was awash with riches!. This is corroborated with Tacitus's writings!.

There has been archaeology to suggest that trading took place, as there is stuff such as earthen ware that contained olive oil etc found in Cornwall!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably not much!. There was not a big population!. There was little commerce!. Very few people ever left the town they were born in!. And there was not a lot to go buy, your raised what you needed or did without!.
That was a long, long time ago!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
