No, it didn't fix anything!.

Charles J!. Guiteau assassinated Garfield!. Garfield was one of the Half-Breeds, i!.e!. moderate Republicans who were against political patronage and for civil service reforms!. His Vice President, Arthur, was one of the Stalwarts, i!.e!. conservative Republicans who were for political patronage and against civil service reforms!.

Guiteau was a Stalwart who failed to secure a post via political patronage!. He killed Garfield so that Arthur would become the President!. However, partly because of the assassination, Arthur's hands were tied and he ended up working for civil service reform!.

President Garfield was assassinated by Charles J!. Guiteau, who was described as a "disgruntled office seeker"!. Under the informal "spoils system" that evolved during the early-to-mid 1800s, elected officials awarded supporters with positions in government (what we now call "civil service" positions)!. Garfield's assassination was instrumental to the passage of the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act in January 1883, which instituted a "merit system" to fill civil service positions!. That system survives to this day, in principle at least!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
