Gallipoli was the site of a failed allied invasion, to try to open up a front in the Balkans!. the ottomans successfully defended themselves from the attack, though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Basically Britain and a combined force of Australian and New Zealand known as ANZAC launched an attack on the Turkish peninsula after a failed attempt by the French and British navies to force the Dardanelles Straits and gain control of this vital waterway which was critical the the Russian shipping import/export industry!.

This caused Europe to suffer from lack of grains and other important Russian exports which were badly need to support the allied war effort!.It similarly proved very problematic for Russia which needed money from exports as well as imports of war materials to support its own effort!.

After being on the fence Turkey finally decided to ally with the central powers and was quickly given support from Germany who sent troops and war equipment to help reinforce and train the Turkish military effort!.

The allies also sought to distract some of Germany's resources away from the western front and give themselves a reprieve from the constant battle!.

Ultimately this plan backfired as it proved to be as big of a drain on allied forces from the western front as it was for Germany!.

A landing on April 25, 1915 of British and French troops which were provided with outdated maps and inaccurate intelligence of enemy troop strengths and location, coupled with some of the worst landscape possible for making an assault from the sea made the campaign a disaster!.

After 8 months of brutal battle the allies were, for the most part, unable to advance any farther than the beaches!.

The allies made a stealthy withdrawl begging in December and ending in January 1916,which they amazingly pulled off with minimum casualties!.

All in all the campaign was a disaster for the allies who suffered 300,000 casualties 100,000 deaths compared to 150,000 casualties and 20,000 deaths suffered by the Turks!.

The allied retreat allowed the Turks to remain in control of the straits and effectivly cut off Russian shipping which would be a factor in Russia's inability to continue fighting!.
