I enjoy a little bit of everything, but lately I've really been into Tudor England (especially Henry VIII and Elizabeth I) and Regency England!. I used to be a huge ancient Egypt freak, but I was never into Rome for some reason!. Oh, I'm also interested in Marie Antoinette (French Revolution) and pretty much any other powerful/interesting female historical leader!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My favourite is the Middle Ages and Ancient Rome!. These time periods were important stages of economic growth, but also social and political progression!.

1!. (favourite) The Medieval era is particularly intriguing because it encompasses the discovery of new lands beyond the known world in 1492 AD!. Islam is born through Mohammed who writes the "holy text" known as the Koran!. The Papacy controlled the kingdoms of christendom with the power of excommunication and interdiction!. Their influence eventually sparked the Crusades which aimed to re-assert Christian authority over the holy lands!. It's a time of limited education opportunities and irrational thinking!. Having said this, it's home to some of the most amazing conflicts is history that have ever occured!. The Mongol Invasion of China and Europe, plus the 100 years war' between France and England!. Viking raids on monasteries, Norman occupation of England and Muslim attacks on Spain!. The Black Death also ravages Asia, Europe and the East killing approximately 75 million people!.

2!. (second favourite) Technological development in Rome is the most significant aspect, because their inventions improved warfare techniques greatly!. Aqueducts for plumbing purposes, paved roads for easily transporting goods, sewers and cement were all devised and used in Roman society!. Their rich culture, ideas, beliefs, attitudes and values passed across all conquered provinces!. They were even responsible for the spread of Christianity after Emperor Theodosius the first banned Paganism in 391 AD!. There are numerous historical figureheads and famous battles as well!.

3!. (worst, not having a go at other peoples opinions) My worst would have to be Ancient Egypt, which is terribly boring!. The Gods and Pyramids are awfully dull, and the weapons used are rather primitive!. During Hatshepsuts reign it was a period of isolation, trading and building!. The sculptures, artwork and architechture in general, are less than astounding and this subject is just horrible!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best periods of time to study are the ones right after war, like the years after World War I or II!. It's really interesting to study how civilizations try to recover from such devastation as war!. Take Germany for instance, after World War I the blame for that war was placed on Germany!. This caused a domino effect which ultimately led to the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am fanatic about the Anglo Boer War and then especially the lesser known side of it!. I am fortunate enough to have been to Magersfontein battlefield, a devastating loss to the British in December 1899 on the single largest battlefield in South Africa, just outside Kimberley!. I have visited seemingly unimportant sites such as the widely unheard of Knysna Fort, Uniondale Blockhouse and Modder River Blockhouse!. Outside my home town, literaly on the opposite bank of the Wabooms River which borders our farm, a British encampment stood once!.

I am writing a story abouth the war and Port Elizabeth, as I was born here!. In this city a war enthuistast can find the remains of defensive trenches dug out by the Town Guard, one of the better concentration camps of the war as well as a cemetery memorial where only fourteen souls lay, all at birth or of old age!. The camp was on the site now occupied by the police sportsgrounds!. It was the largest centre for the impotrt of remounts and the depot was housed in the old Showgrounds!.

The Prince Alfred's Guard, a local volunteer regiment, have a wonderful Drill Hall Museum, a memorial in famous St George's Park and a memorial chapel in the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin!. The city's Horse Memorial is the most famous combat animal memorial in the world and one of only three dedicated to horses!.

I have a vast collection of books on the subject as well, and read them on my way to work and home as I do not drive as I am part of a carpool!.

I have participated in many centennial celebrations during 1999 to 2002 such as torch runs, oxwagon treks (where we pull a wagon in memory of the suffering in the concentration camps) and folk dancing at such events!.

Why do I have such an interest in this war!? Firstly, it is my people, the Boers and later the Afrikaners, who paid dearly for this war of gold and greed!. Secondly, it was a war of deliberate jingoism where the British Empire saw it fit to rob and steal even indepence to come by wealth and riches!. They annexed the Boer Republic of natal to come by their coal, ignored their own conventions to come by the diamond rich Kimberley, and then declared war for mines still wielding gold today!. Thirdly, it was in my opinion the first world war as it involved the entire British Empire, Holland, Germany, France, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Mexico, Argentina and America!. Not all may have physically fought in the war, but they offered their services as volunteers, both in battle and as ambulances and hospitalers, sold horses and even something miniscule but devestating still today - the black ant - which came to Africa in horse fodder from the Agentine in the war!.

The only war third only to both world wars to have memorials in every country that participated, and every town from where men set off, it is the earliest war where such a trend took place!. Even in my boss' home town back in england, West Bromwich, is a memorial, and his great-grandfather also fought over here for Queen, and later King, and country!.

There is so much in the Boer War that if I don't say goodbye now, I'm liable to have our gig capped before my salary's EFTd on Friday, so I hope I've shared my passion sufficiently!. Thanks for asking!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Aztec Empire, the Mayans, Egypt, the Roman Empire, The Crusades, many of the dynasties in China and everything from World War I to the end of the Cold War!.

haha yeah, i told you more than one, but it's okay!. Choose one for me :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am most interested in ancient history, and I also find the medieval period fascinating!. I tend to get less interested the closer to the present it gets!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
