Question: Can someone explain to me why and how eastern and western christianity split!? !?
I don't really want the differences between the two sects because I already know them (ie: western used latin, eastern used different languages, etc!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was a rather long process that began during the early days of "official" Christianity, but it basically boils down to a power struggle!. Originally there were a number of bishops who were in charge of their particular area!. After a while the Bishop of Rome decided that his was the highest of all!. The Eastern bishops (patriarches) refused to recognize the Bishop of Rome as their leader!. This wasn't as big a deal when the Church was being persecuted, but in the 1050s it came to a head!. That, coupled with the differences in worship and lifestyles of the priests and ech sides unwillingness to bend lead to the schism!. They rejoined a couple of times and didn't make it permanent until after the Fall of Constanstinople, but 1054 pretty much sealed the deal!.
The how basically boils down to the fact that the emperor relocated to the east and Rome was basically on their own!. It gave the church an excessive amount of power (or the ability to take power) which they would have for centuries!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
