Ireland was once part of UK, the separation came in about 1921 following an uprising in Dublin of 1916 at which point it became all to obvious to the British that they could no longer hold on to the province of Ireland!.

The Rt Hon David Lloyd George MP - Prime minister, wanted to set Ireland free but the northern most six counties, comprising Ulster, would have none of it!.

Well, it's a long and bloody history!.

Here's a website which gives you all you want to know about the history of Ireland - most of which has been a struggle for independence culminating in the Irish Revolution of 1916

It was never part of Britain the Republic became in 1801 part of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland!.

Unfortunately you've been inundated with peoples political opinions!. The correct answer to your question is that Ireland up until 1922!. Was part of the United Kingdom in the same way that Northern Ireland is today!. It is not Britain because Britain is England and Wales!. Great Britain is England Wales and Scotland!. And at the time there was a United Kingdom of great Britain and Ireland!.

Seerdet is spot-on with his/her answer!. The Normans were invited in!.

And, for those who still boast that "Ireland has never been conquered" - well, it just wasn't worth conquering!. No natural resources to speak of, just a bog, really!. Not even the Romans bothered with Ireland!

And anyway, whether or not Ireland - never a "nation" in the proper sense of the word (the towns are Viking, not Irish foundations) - was "ever part of Britain" politically, it is indisputably, physically a part of the "British Isles"!. Not even the most fervent Republican could deny that basic fact!.

The horrible maltreatment of the Irish by the English ruling classes over the past 400 years or so should not lead us to over-sentimentalise these basic facts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Before 1922 all of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom!. Home rule was then given to the 'Irish Free State' later to become the Irish Republic!. Disastrously, the government of the day was bullied by the Protestants of Northern Ireland into partitioning the island so that 6 counties in the North remained as part of the United kingdom, laying the foundations of bitter sectarian struggles in the decades to come!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yeah, It was because Britain 'invaded' Ireland and took it over completely!. The British tried to take away Gaeilge as our main language and they enforced English as the main language!. Alot of Irish people still hold bitterness towards the Brits even though they won't admit it!. I even hold a slight resentment, my ancestors were attacked by the english and their bar was destroyed!. Watch the film 'The wind that shakes the Barley' - with Cillian Murphy and 'Michael Collins'!. Two great films that describe what happend!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. They were conquered and treated horribly!. There is much resentment to this day and the UK still holds Northern Ireland!. The main cause of the potato famine was the British forcing the Irish to change all of their crops to bring more money to the empire, and when the potato blight hit the Irish had no other food crops to turn to!. The population of Ireland has still not recovered from this!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The british didnt invade ireland - the country was invaded by normans settled in south wales at the invitation of an irish chieftain who offered them land in return for military assistance!. because the normans were technically vassals of the norman ruler of england all land conquered by the normans was held by them as vassals of henry 11 The british crown inherited the country from the norman dynasty!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it was!. Henry VIII started the first invasion!.

"The Irish War of Independence (or Tan War, or Anglo-Irish War, [4] Irish: Cogadh na Saoirse) from January 1919 to July 1921 was a guerrilla war mounted against the British government in Ireland by the Irish Republican Army (IRA)!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
