Mobility, the weapons utilized by the opposing army, the funcion of the soldier, the terrain, the climate, etc!.

Who gave me thumbs down!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Miss Francesca actually gave a sound answer, and whoever gave her a thumbs down deserves a spanking !!

The armor is first selected by what materials are available at the time: leather, fabric, bronze, iron chain-mail, steel, and composites!?

Next selection would be what are you seeking protection FROM: clubs, spears, swords and other blades, arrows, bullets, explosive shrapnel!?

THEN you look at the construction / manufacturing techniques and capabilities available!.

You then balance the armor available with the wearers need for: mobility, protection, comfort, AND the wearers: status, purpose, and ability to afford the cost of the armor!.

A mounted knight might wear FULL steel body armor over chain mail, with a helmet AND armor for his horse!.!.!. BECAUSE, he is at risk from all threats of the day, his horse can CARRY the armor and knight, and the knight can AFFORD IT!.

That knight then might have in his employ foot fighters who are only armored with a leather jerkin (coat) over chain-mail and half-helmets!.!.!. BECAUSE, they are on foot and can't carry the full-armor, on foot they need to mobility and flexibility to swing their weapons, AND the knight can't AFFORD to buy much more for "mere fighters"!. The knight will also have archers who will ONLY be armored with a leather jerkin and steel helmet BECAUSE: they are back from the fighting and don't need the armor, IF the fighting comes close: their protection is to RUN!.

This back and forth balance has gone of for CENTURIES!.!.!. when the GUN was brought into regular us, armor goes out of usage other than the helmet until about WWII!.!.!. when body armor was only used by gunners and pilots (so heavy you had to be sitting / riding)!.

Then in Vietman, the "flak-jacket" gets light enough for foot-soldiers to wear, BUT the climate made wearing them miserable!.

Today, body armor is composite and light enough to be worn at all times!.

I hope this helps!.!.!. let me know if you need clarification or specifics!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
