An average Roman housewife normally left her home only to go shopping, to go to the baths, or, if she wanted, to visit her friends and relatives!. From time to time she joined the public festivities if her husband were to take her to banquets!. Dancing and singing were though to be unsuitable in Rome!. One poet from Ancient Rome said that dancing was the first step to prostitution!. A woman did not count as someone in politics!. She could not vote or be a witness in court!. A women was also unable to own anything!. Women were dependent on their father or husband!. Divorce was impossible, even if the husband cheated!. Husbands in Rome reserved the right to murder both adulterating wives and their lovers if they discovered the infidelity!. Later on, women were allowed to divorce!.

Women didn't have as many privileges as men in ancient Greece!. For example, they were not allowed to eat or sleep in the same room as men, go to the Olympics, or go into the marketplace or streets of the city!. Their most important tasks were to have children and take care of the household!. Greek women were treated inferior to men!. They played no part in public life, were not citizens, and couldn't vote!. Women were kept apart from men!. They were usually confined to the back or upper part of the house to keep them 'safe' from men they were not related to!. Women were ruled by their father, husband or even their son!.

I don't know that if, in any of these two cultures, women were raped all the time, but I'm sure that it did happen!. On the other hand, they were mainly confined to the home, so maybe that protected them a bit more!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Roman woman was subject to the paterfamilias, whether the dominant male in her household of birth or the household of her husband!. She could own and dispose of property and go about as she wished!. We read that a Roman woman was valued for piety, modesty, maintenance of harmony, and being a one-man woman!. She could be a Roman citizen!.

Greek -mostly Athenian- women were not citizens!. They were very mistreated and had no rights!. If I am correct!. They were not ever allowed to leave the house of their husbands!. The only women allowed to be seen outside of the house with a man would be his mistresses -girlfriends-!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well actually I read that women in Greece weren't looked down on and they're voice was actually respected!. also that same sex relations weren't looked down on either!. I'm guessing that if women's voice was actually heard and respected, well their body would've been as well!. Maybe Romans weren't as respectful though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
