There are various reasons!. Sometimes cities end up burying themselves under their own building debris and rubbish!. As new buildings are built on top of these layers the city can gradually rise up to form a mound!. This sort of process is common in the middle east, where such mounds are called 'tells'!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Tell

Another way cities can be buried is by flooding!. Floods lay down layers of silt and these can build up over time, burying archaeological remains!.

A third way, which is quite rare, is for a site to be buried under volcanic ash or mud!. This is famously the case with the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and also with the town of Akrotiri on the Greek island of Santorini!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Akrotiri_(S!.!.!.

Another factor in the burial of sites is vegetation!. If an abandoned site becomes overgrown then a layer of dead leaves, fallen branches and other plant remains will start to build up over it!. Often this material will rot down and form soil: in rarer cases it may become waterlogged and form peat!.

Finally, do not overlook the contribution of the humble earthworm!. These can play an important part in the burial of sites because they ingest soil and then excrete it on the surface!. Over a long period of time this means that the fine particles in the soil will tend to move up to the surface whilst larger items, such as stones (which are too big for the worms to swallow) will sink down and become buried!. It is a little known fact that Charles Darwin did a lot of research into this process, and discussed it in a book called 'The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms'!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Over time, it gets buried under mud, sand, or dirt!. Cities from tens of thousands of years ago go through a lot by the time people find them!. Geography changes and wears down rocks and causes avalanches and such things and buildings are just naturally buried!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mostly because its ancient!. The Earth changes frequently!. Like in the U!.S!. how New Orleans is being washed away!. It's just time passing!.
